Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini: What You Really Get for Free (2026)

Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini all have a free plan, but they are not the same. One gives you image tools, another gives you built-in storage, and each one limits how much you can use. Here is what the official pages say each free plan includes, how the limits work, and which free plan to try first for your own tasks.

Free plans change often. The details below come from the official pages of Claude, OpenAI and Google, checked on October 30, 2026. None of the three publishes exact numbers for free usage, so open the plan page before you decide.

The short answer

  • Gemini free is the widest bundle: image tools, Deep Research, voice chat and 15 GB of storage shared with your Google account
  • Claude free is the most "work-focused": web search, file creation, code execution, memory and Artifacts
  • ChatGPT free is the most familiar, with image creation and GPTs, but it can show ads in some countries
  • None gives unlimited use. All three slow down or pause you when you reach the limit

What Each Free Plan Includes

Claude Free

According to Claude's pricing page, the Free plan includes:

  • Chat on web, desktop and mobile
  • Web search, file creation and code execution
  • Memory, connections to apps and tools, and Artifacts
  • Claude Design, Slides and Docs
  • Up to 5 projects, with the Sonnet and Haiku models

The paid Pro plan is $20 per month, or $17 per month with annual billing, and adds more usage, unlimited projects and the Opus models.

ChatGPT Free

OpenAI's free plan pages list:

  • Access to its default model, with web search, data analysis, file and image uploads, and image creation
  • Use of GPTs from the GPT store (creating GPTs needs a paid plan)
  • Limited memory and limited deep research, according to the pricing page
  • 500 MB of library storage

The help page says ads may appear for Free users in certain countries, and that usage limits may be lower in exchange.

Gemini Free

Google's plan page says the free plan, available with a Google Account, includes:

  • Image generation and editing
  • Deep Research
  • Gemini Live (voice conversations)
  • Canvas and Gems
  • Limited access to Google Flow, a creative studio
  • Gemini Notebook, a research and writing assistant
  • 15 GB of storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos

The first paid tier, Google AI Plus, is $4.99 per month with 2x the free usage. Google AI Pro is $19.99 per month with 4x.

How the Free Limits Work

  • Claude: the pricing page does not give a number for free usage. Claude's help page says Pro offers at least five times the usage per session compared with free, during peak hours
  • ChatGPT: the help page says messages are capped within a five-hour window, and uploads, data analysis and image creation each have their own limits. When you hit the limit, you are invited to upgrade and have to wait for the reset
  • Gemini: the page says usage depends on how complex your prompts are, which features you use and how long your chats are. Limits reset every 5 hours until a weekly limit is reached

Why you cannot rely on exact numbers

None of the three companies lists a fixed number of free messages. Limits can change with demand, so the best test is your own daily use for a week.

Which Free Plan Is Best for...?

Writing and long documents

Try Claude first. It has file creation, Artifacts and projects on the free plan. Compare it with the others on your own text.

Images

Gemini and ChatGPT both list image creation or editing in their free plans. Test the same prompt in both and pick the style you like.

Research

Gemini lists Deep Research in its free plan. ChatGPT lists limited deep research. Claude lists web search on free, so check how it handles your question.

Coding and automation

Claude includes code execution on free. ChatGPT includes data analysis. Try a small real task in each.

A 15-Minute Free Plan Test

  1. Choose three real tasks: a piece of writing, an image or design idea, and a research question
  2. Run the same prompts in Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini on the free plans
  3. Score each answer from 1 to 5 for accuracy, clarity and time saved
  4. Note which one hits a limit first
  5. Keep one main tool, and use a second only for what it does best

When Is It Worth Paying?

Pay only when the free limits stop you from working. The mid-range paid plans cost about $20 per month for Claude and $19.99 for Google AI Pro, and ChatGPT also has a Plus plan in that price range, so check its pricing page. Google also has a cheaper $4.99 tier. Upgrade the one tool you use most, not all three.
